6 Axis Vertical Machines

You’ve likely heard of 3, 4 and even 5 axis CNC vertical machines, but did you know that there is a 6 axis CNC vertical machine too? Although quite rare, and not necessary for most machine shops, the 6 axis CNC machine is unrivaled in the speed at which it is able to produce machined parts. With an additional axis of freedom, certain tool movements and transitions can be executed with greater speed and efficiency that reduces cutting times by as much as 75%.

What is 6 axis CNC machining used for?

The 6 axis vertical machine is designed for volume machining of aluminium, steel, cast iron and model making materials. It uses a unique 3 axis milling head to allow simultaneous 6 axis CNC machining for high accuracy production of large aerospace and automotive parts, plus model-making and mould applications.

How does 6 axis CNC machining work?

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining is a digital manufacturing process that produces high-precision parts with exact physical properties by following computerised instructions directly from a 3D CAD/CAM file. The 6 axis machine tools remove layers of material from a stock piece or blank workpiece to produce a custom-designed part.

Using the Cartesian Coordinate system, X, Y and Z represent the three linear axes in a 6 axis machine and A, B and C represent the rotational axes that rotate around the X, Y and Z axes respectively. This means that the milling head is able to approach the workpiece from any direction or angle, making it possible to machine complex components in a single setup. This saves an enormous amount of time and labour.

Camtech Precision Engineering have invested in state-of-the-art technology, machinery and equipment, as well as expert engineers, designers and technicians to offer a range of integrated services from design verification, prototype modelling through to manufacture and delivery. Our production areas and plant layout have been designed for maximum efficiency and functionality for increased output at faster speeds and improved accuracy.

We are ISO 9001 and UKAS Management Systems certifications ensure that our quality assurance standards at each step of the engineering and delivery process are followed rigorously. Our engineering expertise allows us to provide valuable recommendations on 3D CAD/CAM designs and production processes to improve functionality, reduce costs and increase output and capacity for the most optimised outcomes. Once your production is complete and all quality control and final checks have taken place, your products will be delivered nationwide anywhere in the UK or internationally.
